The Swedish Network for European Legal Studies (SNELS) Spring Conference 2012 is devoted to the historic event of rebellions and revolutions in the North of Africa and the Middle East, which is commonly referred to as the “Arab Spring”. The Conference addresses questions regarding the potential effects of the “Arab Spring” on the relationship between the EU and its neighbours around the Mediterranean. Many, though not all, of these states are part of the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP) as well as the framework of the Union for the Mediterranean. What options are available within these frameworks? Has the EU used these options in response to the events of the last 15 months? Should it? These questions, and many more, will be discussed during the conference, where representatives of several academic disciplines meet representatives of EU institutions as well as the Swedish Foreign Office in an endeavour to broaden our horizons regarding the EU and the “Arab Spring”.
