EU Competition Law and the emerging harmonization of private enforcement

On 17 April 2014, The European Parliament approved last year's Commission proposal for a Directive on damages actions for breaches of EU competition law, which aims at promoting actions for compensation by victims of EU competition law infringements. In 2013, the Commission also issued a non-binding communication and practical guide to the quantification of harm in antitrust infringements, and a recommendation on collective redress.

Do these instruments herald the emergence of a harmonized regime of private enforcement of EU competition law and if so what are the implications?

This conference will attempt to provide an answer to that question, by discussing these recent developments in private enforcement of EU competition law in context as well as in some detail from the different perspectives of the EU judge, the competition authority (Commission, NCAs), the national judge, the private practitioner, and academia.

Keynote speeches will be given by: Judge Carl Wetter (General Court, CJEU) and Per Karlsson (Chief lawyer, Swedish Competition Authority)
